The Small Chronicle of a Big Jubilee
In 2024, the Kaunas Benedictine Monastery celebrates its 400th anniversary. The Jubilee festivities began on November 26, 2023. The celebrations commenced with a Holy Mass, during which Archbishop K. Kėvalas led a prayer for the Jubilee. This was followed by two insightful presentations: Fr. A. Kazlauskas discussed the history and significance of the Jubilee, while Sr. Gabriele recounted the early history of our monastery. The sisters, accompanied by the choir "Cantus Benedictus," concluded the event with a blessing dance for the upcoming Jubilee.
On May 30-31, 2024, an international scientific conference was held at Vytautas Magnus University, focusing on "Monastic Life in Lithuania: History and Perspectives."
On June 14, the renovated Cross next to our church was blessed to honor our former chaplain, Bl. Teofilius Matulionis, who originally built it.
On July 11, the feast of St. Benedict, Sr. Juozapa celebrated her 25th year of monastic profession, and Sr. Barbora celebrated her 40th year. Additionally, a new lay oblate, Virginija, joined the oblate community.
The celebrations extended to July 14, drawing about 100 relatives, neighbors, and friends to our church for the Eucharist. After the Mass, everyone was invited to view an exhibition by painter Indre Barone, an oblate of our monastery, dedicated to the Jubilee. The day concluded with a shared meal, performances by the choir "Do-diez" from Kaišiadorys, poetry readings by guests, and a tour of the church led by Prioress Sr. Paulina, who shared more about the monastery's history.
